Marriage & Family Therapy — including Medical Family Therapy

I am a Doctor and provide marriage & family psychotherapy as an Intern under clinical supervision for individuals, couples, parents, and children — supporting general relational, family, and parent-child concerns, as well as specialized support through a Medical Family Therapy lens for families where a health condition, medical complexity, neurodivergence, disability, or feeding/eating concern and family life transitions are part of the picture. Whether the focus is everyday relationship and family dynamics or the added weight of a health challenge, my approach centers the whole family system, not just the identified patient.

My Credentials & Supervision

I hold a PhD in Psychology, with a specialization in Health Psychology, and I am a clinician-in-training in Marriage & Family Therapy. I am currently working towards licensure and am an Intern under supervision through Arise Counseling Center in Virginia.

Where I Provide Services
Currently: Virginia

What I Treat

  • Medical Family Therapy — supporting families navigating chronic illness, disability, neurodivergence, and mental health conditions across the family system, including children, spouses, and other family members (e.g., diabetes, autism, ADHD, kidney disease, MS, and other chronic conditions). This does not include oncology or end-of-life/palliative care.

  • Caregiver & Family Systems Support — for spouses, parents, and adult children caregiving a family member with a chronic health condition, disorder, or neurodivergence. Including the emotional and psychological toll of financial stress on caregiving families.

  • General Marriage & Family Therapy — relational, communication, and family dynamics concerns, family life transitions, and parent-child dyadic concerns.

  • Child & Adolescent Therapy— supporting children and teens with emotional, behavioral, and developmental concerns, including those adjusting to a chronic health condition, diagnosis, or family health-related stress, or family transitions.

  • Prenatal & Postpartum Support—supporting families through NICU trauma, birth trauma, infant loss, perinatal grief, and the psychological and relational dimensions of pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.

  • Sibling & Family Impact — supporting siblings and the whole family system alongside the child or family member with a chronic condition

  • Pediatric Feeding & Mealtime Challenges — Supporting children and families navigating food refusal, mealtime distress, and feeding difficulties, including in the context of medical complexity, neurodivergence, or sensory sensitivities. With specialized training in pediatric feeding (TR-Eat), I focus on the psychological and family-systems side of feeding, often working alongside a child's broader care team (OT, SLP, GI, dietitians).

  • Eating & Feeding Concerns — Emotional relationship with food including disordered eating patterns and body image; does not include medically acute or high-severity eating disorders requiring a higher level of care, though I welcome working with individuals and families once medically stabilized, as part of ongoing or step-down family-based care

  • Food Trauma Therapy—Treating the psychological roots of disordered eating, unhealthy food relationships, and food-related anxiety within a health psychology and family systems framework.

  • Health Behavior Change Therapy—Supporting families in building sustainable nutrition, movement, and sleep within a therapeutic relationship.

  • Health Psychology Services—Therapeutic support for the psychological dimensions of physical health — including chronic illness, brain health, and medical adherence.

What Therapy With Me Looks Like
Sessions are collaborative and grounded in your family's specific context — whether that's working through communication patterns as a couple, supporting a child or adolescent, navigating a family transition, or managing the emotional weight of a diagnosis or medical complexity. This is psychotherapy, not educational consulting — it establishes a therapeutic relationship and may involve diagnosis and treatment planning as clinically appropriate. Dr. Adwoa provides psychotherapy services as an intern under supervision. Insurance is accepted through Arise Counseling Center.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text 988, or go to your nearest emergency room.
