How My Healthy Lifestyle Supports My Hair Growth: A Personal Story
Over the past few days, before I posted this picture, I spent hours (literally) detangling my hair, trimming a bit, and blow-drying my curls. After a good workout, I snapped this photo, and I couldn't help but marvel at how much my hair continues to grow — and how quickly. I'm convinced that my healthy lifestyle, which I've been committed to for over 20 years, plays a massive role. It's not just about hair care products or styling; it's about the foods I eat, the water I drink, the exercise I do, and the stress-free life I prioritize.
As a mom and advocate for healthy living, I've learned that supporting my body holistically leads to stronger, healthier hair. Today, I want to share how my daily habits and hair care routine work together to help my hair grow longer, stronger, and more nutritious.
My Holistic, Plant-Based Lifestyle
I've adopted a plant-based lifestyle for over 15 years, and it has truly transformed how I feel and how my body functions, including my hair. I focus on eating fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, making sure my meals are nutrient-rich. For example, I have daily smoothies, such as mango, bananna, or berry smoothies with flaxseed, chia seed, tumeric and filtered water to name a few. In addition my daily salads often include leafy greens like arugula paired with homemade dressing made from olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and garlic, loaded with various peppers, brocolli, cucumbers and more. These foods fuel my body and nourish my hair from the inside out.
I also prepare homemade plant-based foods entirely from scratch (every single day), such as sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and nutrient-dense stews packed with vitamins and minerals, in addition to other organic plant-based vegan/vegetarian meals. I load up on raw nuts, too, which are filled with healthy fats essential for hair health. Hydration is another key factor—I drink tons of water daily to keep my scalp hydrated and promote healthy hair follicles. Staying hydrated helps nourish hair follicles and supports healthy cell turnover, vital for growth. I prioritize being sure to get the right amount of sleep nightly all which support my overall health and mental well-being and spending time cultivating my spiritual life with God.
Natural Hair Care Routine
When it comes to hair care, I keep things simple and natural. I wash my hair a few times per week with apple cider vinegar, which helps maintain my scalp's pH balance and free it from build-up. Afterward, I apply a natural conditioner based on apple cider vinegar to moisturize and soften my curls.
Once a week, I apply Jamaican castor oil or raw coconut oil to my scalp and hair, especially when I'm twisting it for the week or prepping for a twist-out style. These oils have been game-changers in locking in moisture and promoting healthy hair growth. Plus, they're natural and affordable — and they smell amazing!
I also avoid excessive manipulation of my hair. I refrain from using combs or brushes weekly, instead opting to use my fingers for styling, whether for a twist-out or a bun. I blow-dry my hair with low heat only a few times a year, and I rarely apply full heat to my hair, usually only once a year (or every other year). Overall, keeping my hair low maintenance and in its natural state 365 days per year helps prevent breakage and preserves its strength.
Stress-Free Living and Exercise
In addition to what I eat and how I care for my hair, living a stress-free life has been essential. Chronic stress can contribute to hair loss and thinning, so I focus on activities that bring me peace. I make time for regular exercise, which boosts circulation to my scalp and supports overall hair health. A positive, loving relationship with family and friends and moments of quiet help me maintain emotional balance and promote well-being.
The Results
My holistic lifestyle, plant-based eating, hydration, and stress management have worked wonders for my hair. My hair continually grows faster, stronger, and healthier, and I am convinced that a balanced lifestyle is key to maintaining vibrant hair. For anyone curious, the secret to long, healthy hair isn't just about the products you use but how you treat your body and mind.
Living a healthy, holistic lifestyle has allowed me to nourish my hair from the inside out, and I'm excited to continue this journey. If you're looking for ways to improve your hair health, I encourage you to focus on what you're fueling your body with, how much hydration you're getting, and how you care for yourself holistically from the inside out. 🌱✨
